Ubud by month
What to expect
Elevation & temperature
Ubud sits at ~600m — cooler and cloudier than coastal Bali. Days 27–30°C (81–86°F), evenings drop to 20–23°C (68–73°F). Always bring a light layer for A/C restaurants and night scooter rides.
Dry season (May–October)
Sunny mornings, low humidity (65–75%), minimal rain. August is the driest month. Peak season — busier but easiest time to be here.
Wet season (November–April)
Afternoon and evening showers, humidity 80–95%. Rain is usually short and intense — not all day. Landscape turns beautifully lush. Go out in the morning, plan to be somewhere cozy by 2–3pm.
Water
Don't drink tap water. Stick to sealed bottles or filtered water — Clear Cafe, Bali Buda, and Seniman all use filtered water. Stay more hydrated than you think you need to.

Practical notes
Gojek vs. Grab — two separate apps
Gojek is Indonesian (Jakarta-founded) and the locals' default in Bali — cheaper, more drivers, food delivery too. Grab is Singaporean and slightly pricier but also works everywhere. Download both — Gojek is your everyday driver, Grab is backup. Set up payment before you need them. Both beat street taxis on price.
Cash & ATMs
Warungs and small cafes are often cash-only. BCA and Mandiri ATMs have the best rates and lowest fees. Avoid airport exchange booths. Bring IDR for anything small.
Health
Don't drink tap water. Stay hydrated — more than you think. Bring stomach medication (Imodium, Pepto), sunscreen, and mosquito repellent with DEET. Dengue fever is present year-round; use repellent especially at dusk.
Travel insurance
BIMC accepts most international insurance but payment is often expected upfront and then reimbursed. Keep your policy details accessible offline.
Scooters
Renting a scooter
Rp 60,000–100,000/day (~$4–6) for a standard Honda Beat or Vario. Prices are negotiable for multi-day rentals. Helmet always included (legally required). Rentals are everywhere — ask your villa or look along Jl. Monkey Forest in Ubud. Fuel is cheap: full tank ≈ Rp 20,000.
License requirements
Technically you need an International Driving Permit (IDP) with a motorcycle endorsement. In practice, rental shops rarely check, but police do set up checkpoints — especially in tourist areas. If stopped without an IDP, fines are negotiable (Rp 50,000–200,000). If you have a US motorcycle license, get an IDP from AAA before leaving — it takes 10 minutes and costs $20.
Scooter training in Ubud
Bali Scooter Training (search on Google Maps) offers beginner lessons specifically for tourists — typically 1–2 hours, Rp 200,000–350,000. Several rental shops along Jl. Monkey Forest will also give a quick tutorial in a quiet parking area if you ask. Your villa host can usually point you to someone. Most people get comfortable within 30 minutes on Bali's quieter back roads.
Safety tips
Always wear the helmet. Drive on the left. Watch for dogs, offerings on the road, and sudden potholes. Avoid riding at night — roads are poorly lit and dogs are unpredictable. Don't ride after drinking. Keep your bag in front of you or use a backpack — bag snatching from scooters happens. Download Maps offline before you go (Google Maps or Maps.me).
Insurance
Rental scooters have no insurance. Check that your travel insurance covers motorcycle riding — many standard policies exclude it unless you have an IDP. World Nomads and SafetyWing both cover it with proper license documentation.
